Toby Melville-Brown

I am an artist working from London. I spend a great deal of time wondering at my city from its vantage points. My drawings then college every layer of the metropolis, into one self-contained architectural arrangement.

In my work I try to convey my obsession with civilization. Though I don’t comment on environmental issues, nor condemn our excessive nature; I’m merely fascinated in the synthetic landscape we have constructed around ourselves.

Tower Series is my first commercially available project. In it, I present three architectural caricatures. Each one looks at a different motive as to why we build the way we do. The first is Self-Congratulation; this structure exists simply as an oversized trophy, celebrating its architect. The second, Land Utilization, presents a scene where estate is so overpopulated that the dwellings seem to compete for their plot, like barnacles clinging to a rock. The third drawing discusses Function; this tower is a giant apparatus that works tirelessly for its investors.
